High Peak and Connal Wilson Lodges are pleased to announce that they have both made donations to help with the fund raising initiative by the Chapel-en-le-Frith Branch of The Royal British Legion. The original aim was to collect enough money to place at least 10 “Silent Soldiers” in and around Chapel-en-le-Frith. As of the 18th August 2018 the number has already reached 28.
The picture above shows the two Silent Soldiers donated by High Peak and Connal Wilson Lodges, they are positioned at each side of the War Memorial on Chapel-en-le-Frith market place. The Silent Soldiers are a black plastic silhouette of a soldier returning from the First World War.
They stand as a tribute to those who didn’t return home and to those whose lives would never be the same again.
More than 1.1 million British and Empire service men and women gave their lives during this war so that future generations could live theirs. When the soldiers got back to England they were given a railway ticket to their home station. From there they were on their own and would be seen across the country, walking back home, down the roads and across the fields, returning to their families.
Hence the Silent Soldier.
This is a country wide campaign organized by The Royal British Legion to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the end of The First World War.
